2011 marks the release of Dodd Ferrelle’s CD Hide the World and also the 10th
anniversary of his first solo recording, A Carriage On the Hill. From the Mariachi horn
colored stomp of “Control” to the familiar Ferrelle wail of “One day I will forgive you.
Forgive or Forget you” in the bridge of “One of Us”, Hide the World has the makings of
another memorable Ferrelle release.
Dodd started his musical adventure about 20 years ago with Me'an Mills down in
Savannah, GA. Energized by that college rock thing that was happening in the late ‘80s
they had clubs packed all over their home state from Statesboro to Athens. By 1993
moving the band to Athens seemed to be the next move to launch their career beyond
the southeast college circuit. Me'an Mills split soon after the move and Dodd had to find
another outlet for his songwriting. He teamed up with his former band mate Jon Mills
and future Drive By Trucker John Neff and started Rags. They went in the studio with
John Keane and came out with a fine roots rock CD that laid the ground work for Dodd’s
next CD, A Carriage On The Hill. Carriage was Dodd’s first recording produced by
David Barbe, and he has been at the controls for every Dodd CD since. A Carriage On
The Hill has an almost unexplainable charm that makes it a favorite with anyone that has
followed Dodd’s music over the last decade. Savannah’s WRHQ Savannah still plays the
title track in regular rotation.
Fast forward to 2011 and the release of Hide The World. The new recording features
songs Dodd has been writing at home in Winterville since the release of his last CD
Lonely Parades. Hide the World continues the sonic exploration beyond the roots rock
territory he is commonly associated with. With Barbe’s guidance the new CD once again
features horns from Knox Summerour, Kyle Spence on drums, Neff on pedal steel and a
few other surprises here and there. “Sucker Punch Town” neatly sums up the past decade
or more for Dodd. Not at all indictment of the town he has lived and worked in but more
a reconciliation of what he has seen from the stage and the bar.
Hide The World will be release by Two Sheds Records September 6, 2011.
