A Carriage On The Hill is a phenomenal debut for the Athens, GA singer-songwriter. The former frontman for Rags and current leader of the Tinfoil Stars has created a top-notch record of roots rock full of clever, catchy songs and top notch playing.
Recorded with David Barbe at Chase Park Transductions Studios, Carriage shows the master producer's touch with it's mixture of early Beatles' rhythm section anchored by bassist Jon Mills and drummer Jim Allen, Replacements-style rock guitar and Ferrelle's over-the-top warbling vocals.
Ferrelle pens straight-ahead rock tunes that boast plenty of country twang, which comes off as both familar and refreshing thanks to his knack for clever wordplay.
Like the best singer-songwriters, Ferrelle gets inside a song, cutting to the bone of the matter and exposing truths that affect the listeners. In other words, he may not be singing directly to you, but you can always relate.

A CARRIAGE ON THE HILL
Get Away Clean
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
I hitched up a backpack packed my bags and dreamed of flyin' home
Knowin' when I finally leave I'll have to go it all alone
Knowin' how to leave but not sure what to do when I'm gone
Now I'm just lookin' for my quick escape but how am I gonna get away clean
All this dust and mystery has now become my misery
Winding blinds and squinting eyes looking down is my disguise
Like a leper in the corner in the mornin'
I'm just waitin' for the dark
Now I'm just lookin' for my quick escape so how am I gonna get away clean
Knowing they'll be coming after me
Knowing they'll be coming after me
Now my eyes have been filled with the breaking of wills
They won't be stoppin' with a thrill
But I'll be back down I'll be comin' around
You'll see me I'm falling down
Falling to the ground
I hope I really leave this time - All promises I've left behind
It said leave anytime on the map and thinking that was a pretty fine trap
Knowing how to leave but not sure what to when I'm gone
Now I'm just looking for my quick escape but how am I gonna get away clean
Knowing they'll be coming after me
Shadows and Rain
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
Not one tear will fall here tomorrow
You'd never beg, but you'll damn sure steal and borrow
Then go hide behind the blinds waitin' on your pity and sorrow
Step out from the pain
Walk out from the shadow and rain
Shadows and rain
Shadows and rain that leaks down to the bone when you're all alone
It wasn't meant to end like this at all
One love is dead and it's you left to take the fall
Then go hide behind the blinds waitin' on your pity and sorrow
Step out from your pain
Walk out from the shadow and rain
Shadows and rain
Shadows and rain that leaks down to the bone when you're all alone
Wear your sleeves protect you heart be on your way
Send it off - bundled up and hope it makes the next train
Just don't hide behind the blinds waitin' on your pity and sorrow
Step out from your pain
Walk out from the shadow and rain
Shadows and rain
Shadows and rain that leaks down to the bone when you're all alone
Not one tear will fall here tomorrow
Waiting on The Pour
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
Well the things once on the table find their way to the floor, and I can't
say I'm able to pick 'em up anymore
I'm leavin' - I'm heading for the door
There stands ole Randall he's come here all alone
Left his wife and his family he's drinking alone
We ain't leavin' - 'till they finally make us roam
So come on Jesus - won't you come aboard and lead this ship into a shore
I'm needin' to get my feet onto the floor
I was waiting on the poor
While you were waiting on the pour
This old man stands beside me he's been smilin' all night, but he won't tell
me his story
He keep his lips pursed up tight
Smilin' silent all the night
Then in comes ole Darla - she's come here all alone
She's been asking' lots of questions
What Randall does when he roams?
Leaves Darla there alone
So come on Jesus - won't you come aboard and lead this ship into a shore
I'm needin' to get my feet onto the floor
I was waiting on the poor
While you were waiting on the pour
Well the things once on the table find their way to the floor, and I can't
say I'm able to pick 'em up anymore
I'm leavin' - I'm heading for the door
So come on Jesus - won't you come aboard and lead this ship into a shore
I'm needin' to get my feet onto the floor
I was waiting on the poor
While you were waiting on the pour
Bow to the Fiddle
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
She's a bow she's a fiddle
She's the wind in the pipes
And she keeps my heart warm on the coldest of nights
She's the needle in the compass
She's the brightest of lights
And she stands by the ocean holding me in her sights
Once I was out driftin' in my lonely boat
Then the wind clapped the waves and they hurried me home
And there she stood her feet in the sea
There she's waitin' for me
She's a bow she's a fiddle
She's the wind in the pipes
And she keeps my heart warm on the coldest of nights
She's the needle in the compass
She's the brightest of lights
And she stands by the ocean holding me in her sights
Thru drifters and dreamers and lovers and thieves
She'll let 'em roll in and roll off of her sleeve
She'll shed no tears for those who deceive
She'll give her heart to the one who believes
That she's a bow to the fiddle
She's the wind in the pipes
And she keeps my heart warm on the coldest of nights
She's the needle in the compass
She's the brightest of lights
And she stands by the ocean holding me in her sights
Strung Out Like The Lights (at Christmastime) - lyrics Dodd Ferrelle
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
Could I trade this one in for one for with less sin could I begin again
Well, I wish my friend I had a life to lend
Siting at the bar drinking Christmas dinner with Aaron and the sinners
You and your merry men all hoping you'll get Mary to sin
And I'm strung out like the lights at Christmastime
Some of them are blinking but most of them have died
Cause there ain't no kind of nothing I ain't tried
That's why I am strung out like the lights at Christmastime
Won't you come on home, won't you pick up the phone even if you're not alone
Baby you know I'm alone
Baby you know I'm alone
I just can't wash the roam from my skin and bones I can't find the phone
Well, I'll find you dear 'cause I want you back this year
repeat chorus
Bet It All
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
I was on the road - I was waitin' for a ride and you passed me by
Now all the words I wrote you - girl you can consider them lies
You were just a card in the game and the game is why I stayed here all night
Just to take my chance in hell
Hopping I could get it right
It was the spell of the deal and the cards I seen you steal that drew me in
And you let me win every once in a while
So you kept me coming back here time and time again
And there's a liar on the corner swearin' he was tellin' me the truth
If you take your chance on her boy you'll never ever ever be blue
So I bet it all tonight
Yea, I bet it all tonight
Yea, I bet it all tonight
Just to take my chance on her hoppin' I could get it right
Now she's dancing on my grave and my best friend he just waves as they pass me by
And even the oaks they seem to sway like they're joinin' in - everything's gonna turn out right
But you see there's the liar on the corner whose swearin' he was tellin' me the truth
If you take you chance on her boy
You'll never ever ever be blue
So that's why I bet it all

Keep on followin' that white line
Your doing fine
Take another drink
You don't have to think
You can leave that up to me
Cause I come to soon and stay far too long
Far too long
A Carriage On The Hill
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
All my life I've been lookin' for my shine in the pourin' rain
Now I try to chase the ghosts away from the places that are filled with pain
And I look and see he's on the hill, and I hope he won't be comin' my way today
(Refrain)
Now I know how to come and go and not be seen by anyone
While I was dyin' down inside you
Hiding out behind you you were on the run
And I look and see he's on the hill, and I hope he won't be comin' my way today
(Chorus)
There's a carriage on the hill a man is standing there his hands are tremblin'
He wants to take me to my end
You know his horses look well fed they could go for miles
Take me to my end carry me to my demise
I can't make up my time
Can't make up my mind
And the carriage on the hill lookin' better all the time
Now I know how to come and show you all what you need to learn
How I was dyin' down inside you - hidin' out behind you - you were on the run
(Refrain)
(Chorus)
You Might
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
I wanna go out tonight and dance a while
Arm and arm, cheek to cheek, how your smile lights up this town
Song on the jukebox, singing somethin' 'bout some birds when you walk by
I just gotta catch your eye
So I'm gonna walk up to you
(Chorus)
You might laugh at me
You might run from me
You might marry me
Tryin' to send the eight ball
Waitin' for my highball at the Normaltown Cafe
Well she walked thru the door a thousand times
Well she walked thru the door today
Cause she starts the drummer beatin' on a heart that has been sleepin'
Get the props out for the play
Just get me to the stage
Where I'm gonna walk up to you
(Chorus)
All Last Night
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
Well it’s on, it’s on, it’s hard to believe, but I should be gone
I’ve got to leave cause she’s waited to long
She’s been there she’s done it before
You know I could be wrong, but I really feel like I should be gone
Cause this one is real, but you know the score
I been there, I’ve done it before
Chorus:
I was on the receiving end
All last night I was gone she was sleeping alone
All last night I was gone she was sleeping alone
Happy goes lucky down to the corner looking for a sucker
He’ll find three or four and he knows he can score
He’s been there he’s done it before
Now here comes the bride of 34th and Pope
She’s tryin’ to make a livin’ she won’t make much more
You know I can score- I’ve been there I’ve done it before.
Chorus:
It’s not how many times you cry- How many times you’ve had to say you’ll try.
Next time you do I’ll have to say goodbye.
Crank it up turn the key the band wants to leave
I’m hanging up the phone-goin home to see my baby tonight
She’s sittin home waitin for me
She’s waited too long- It’s time to get up and go home.
Chorus:
All last Night I was gone was she sleeping alone?
Tattered Sails
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
With tattered sails on the river of dreams
I'm driftin'
Findin' it hard to make a livin'
With tattered sails on the river of dreams
I'm driftin'
Home to you
Easy
Words and music: Dodd Ferrelle ©2000
On your way out
How'd it play out
Did you find love - did you have a dream in your heart - That's a start
In the taillights - Ain't no way of life
I find still waters rise and the newspapers fly and I'm fine
Yeah they fly and I'm fine for you
(Chorus)
Everywhere I look I can see it in their eyes
There goes another man who walks to far outside the lines
Maybe it's a dream you could help me realize
If my song is easy let it dance in your mind awhile
I want to know what's real
Ain't gonna beg or steal
I know you'll find me where the still waters meet shine like the blue in
your eyes the I'm fine yeah they shine and I'm fine for you
(Chorus)
Wind it out my friend. Leave it in the wind
I know you'll find me where the still waters meet
Then you'll see
Then you'll see
Then you'll see what you mean to me
Chorus
If these songs are easy let them dance in your mind awhile
